
Dr Mike Fabricius
Dr Mike Fabricius is an experienced tourism manager, strategist,
planner and project implementer who has during the past 15 years
held senior management positions in government, semi-government,
business and academic sectors. He has been closely involved in
positioning tourism as a priority growth sector in South Africa and
has served as Director of SA Tourism, Director and head of South
Africa’s national Tourism Department and CEO of the Western Cape
Tourism Board (including Cape Town and regions). After occupying
various senior management positions in South Africa’s tourism
authorities he established his own tourism consultancy business in
2004. He is experienced in tourism branding and positioning,
marketing strategy and implementation, destination policy and
strategy development, partnership building, tourism business
development, local and regional tourism management, socio-economic
impact management, sustainable tourism management and project
feasibility studies.
He regularly conducts assignments for the World Tourism Organization
(WTO) and has represented the WTO as Tourism Policy Expert at
various destinations around the world including Ethiopia, Spain,
Bali and India. Other examples of recent assignments include a
strategic evaluation of the Botswana tourism industry (World Bank),
formulating and executing a marketing strategy for northern
Mozambique (USAID), designing executing and monitoring a
comprehensive tactical advertising and promotions campaign for the
Cape Winelands region of South Africa (Cape Winelands District
Municipality), formulating a tourism policy and implementation plan
for the Northern Cape Province (Northern Cape Provincial
Government), etc. He has a PhD and MBA (cum laude), specialising in
tourism competitive strategy.
